Of Kalamazoo Robert L. "For Love" Johnson, age 70, passed away Thursday evening, October 30, 2008 at his home with his family by his side. He was born August 18, 1938 in Kalamazoo, the son of Lance and Lena Anderson Johnson. Robert was the co-owner and Chief Financial Officer of Medallion Management Inc. from 1972 until his retirement in 1999. A very active member of the community, Robert was a member of the Board of Directors of Portage Commerce Bank, volunteer for Big Brothers Big Sisters, a longtime member of Portage Moose Lodge #88, and former member of Sertoma and Jaycees. Since childhood, Robert has always had a love for music, which carried into his adult life, where he learned to play the organ for his family and friends. Robert's hobbies included bowling, boating, going to Four Winds Casino, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, playing cards and games. Surviving are his wife, the former Barbara Helms; his mother, Lena Alex Ervin Johnson of Portage; 4 children, Dawn Swander of Vicksburg, Debra Brad Needham of Scotts, Diane Scott Schneider of Kalamazoo, and Donna Don Barnes of Marion, IN; 3 step-children, Richard Brewer of Los Angeles, CA, Cyndi Jerry Mastaw of Rota, Spain, and Tylor Cindy Helms of Indianapolis, IN; 14 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; 6 brothers and sisters, Lance II Marie Johnson of Hilton Head, SC, Carolyn Ken Edson of Vicksburg, Phil Suncha Johnson of Vicksburg, Tim Keri Johnson of Portage, Susan Ayers of Portage, and Marcia Dave Tomko of Richland; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his father; and only son, Dennis Johnson. Funeral services for Robert will be at 10:00 AM on Monday at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th Street, with his longtime friend Rev. Richard Liggett officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family from 3-7 PM on Sunday at the funeral home.
