HUNTER, Robert Kilbourn
Of Kalamazoo, Michigan Robert Kilbourn Hunter died on April 8, 2010 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where he and his wife, Alice Elizabeth Westerman Hunter had moved in 2006 from Muskegon, Michigan.
He was born on June 26, 1916 in Muskegon of Harry Kilbourn Hunter and Evelyn Johnson Hunter. He attended Muskegon City schools and graduated from Muskegon High School. He attended Albion College and received his bachelor of arts degree from Western Michigan University. He served in the United States Army during World War II in Scotland, England and France, where he skippered a tug boat. He subsequently was elected Norton Township Clerk and Norton Township Supervisor, and was the Norton representative to the Muskegon County Board of Supervisors, the Airport Commission, and the Harbor Commission. He was elected to the Norton Charter Commission and became the first Administrator of the new City of Norton Shores. After leaving that post, he was the City of Montague Manager. He served on the Muskegon County Jury Selection Commission for over 30 years.
He was an active member of Central United Methodist Church, and, since 2006, of First United Methodist Church in Kalamazoo. He also served as President of the Muskegon Y's Mens Club, a member of Rotary, and a life member of the Muskegon Yacht Club.
His wife predeceased him in 2008. He is survived by their two children, John Westerman Hunter of Washington, DC, and Mary Alice Meme Hunter Bennett of Kalamazoo, and a son-in-law, Charles Garrett Bennett of Kalamazoo; five grandchildren, Andrew Kilbourn Hunter of Reston, Virginia, Breean Elizabeth Bennett of Kalamazoo, Christian Thomas Hunter Colleen of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Adam Hunter Bennett Amy of Kalamazoo, Meredith Hunter Foster Geoff of Shaker Heights, Ohio; and five great grandchildren, Ashlyn Aileen Hunter of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Hunter Thompson Bennett of Kalamazoo, Liam Cameron Hunter of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Madeline Alayne Foster of Shaker Heights, Ohio, and Emma Verae Bennett of Kalamazoo.
The family asks that contributions be made to either First United Methodist Church, 212 South Park Street, Kalamazoo, Michigan 49007, or Central United Methodist Church, 1011 Second Street, Muskegon, Michigan 49440.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, April 24 at Central United Methodist Church, 1011 Second Street, Muskegon.
