Myron Kollen

August 23, 1913 — June 21, 2014

KOLLEN, Myron
Vicksburg Born August 23, 1913 to James and Minnie Folkert Kollen on a farm near Overisel Holland MI. His death on Saturday, June 21, 2014 was preceded by that of his parents, his older siblings, Harvey Ruth Kleinheksel Kollen and Janet Peter Schreuder, and a younger sister, Marie, at the age of 18. His childhood was typical like many farm youth during the 1929 Depression period, with his education starting in a "1 teacher for 8 grades" school, followed by Holland High, Hope College and more. In 1940, he joined the Unical Oil Research Laboratory in Los Angeles, assigned to modify and protect shipment of English and French war orders filled by us due to the European conflict. When the Japanese bombed Hawaii, he and his recent wife moved their family to Detroit, where he continued similar work for the war effort. In 1961, he and his family moved to Vicksburg, Michigan. He began working at Research Molding in Mendon, enjoying furthering thermoplastic molding development. He continued this type of work until age 75, transferring into the sister company, Summit Polymers. Through it all, he had married Clarissa Gunneman, whom he had known from grade school days. They were blessed with 5 children, Judith Dave Portinga, Robert Carol Greendyke Kollen, Kathleen John Gruizenga, Ronald Kollen and Carol James Hall. During these years he and the family were active participating members of Christian congregations where they resided. Clarissa and Myron took the family on month long, family bonding vacations, which ended when Clarissa's cancer and children's maturity made it impractical. After Clarissa's death, he married Helena Vander Salm Van Dyke, who preceded him in death. This welcomed additional family, including daughters, Marilyn Dale, deceased Osterhouse and Kathleen Hubbard, and son, John Linda Koch VanDyke. The combined family includes 16 grandchildren and many great grandchildren, resulting in many happy family gatherings. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday Tomorrow at Lakeland Reformed Church, 10442 Sprinkle Rd., with Rev. Ed Schmidt, officiating. Burial will take place in Vicksburg Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Center Ave. on Tuesday, from 4-7 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the charity of one's choice.
