Kalamazoo Mike passed away on Saturday, November 1, 2008. He was born February 14, 1945 in Benton Harbor, a son of Alonzo "Bones" and Vera Puckett Melvin and had lived in the Kalamazoo area for many years. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving from 1962 until 1966 aboard the USS Peregrine, as a radioman 3rd class Petty Officer. He still remained friends with several of his shipmates from around the country until his death. Mike worked at the General Motors plant in Kalamazoo as a supervisor from 1966 to 1987. He was in car sales from 1987 to 2004 at Midway Chevrolet in Plainwell and was a member of the American Legion, Post #89 in Allegan. Mike is survived by his wife, Barbara Dunford Melvin, whom he married in October of 1962 in Allegan, MI. He also leaves two sons, Scott Kim Melvin and Shawn Katie Melvin all of Portage; three grandchildren, Jake, Cody and Samantha Melvin of Portage; two brothers, Steve Kathy Melvin and Jeff Darla Melvin all of Allegan; his mother and step-father, Vera and Buster Milbocker of Allegan; a sister-in-law Phyllis VanHoe Dunford;2 step-brothers, Steve Milbocker and Scott Milbocker; 2 step-sisters, Sue Maurer and Kathy De Mann; and several nieces and nephews. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place and a committal service will be conducted on Thursday at 11:00 AM at Fort Custer National Cemetery, 15501 Dickman Rd., Augusta. Following the committal service, a gathering for family and friends will be held in the Clubhouse at Fountain Springs, 1410 South 9th Street, beginning at 1:00 PM. Those wishing to make a lasting gift in Michael's name are asked to remember Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.
