MEYER, Mrs. Marian
Portage, MI Marian passed away Saturday evening, September 19, 2009, at Rose Arbor Hospice Residence and went to be with her Lord. She was born November 20, 1917, in Great Meadows, NJ, a daughter of Bulo and Lena Drenth Brouwer. After her father's death in 1918, Marian moved to Portage, MI with her mother, two brothers and three sisters. She graduated from Portage High School in 1935 and later graduated from Maher's Business College. She was employed for 4 years at Industrial State Bank. On August 24, 1939, Marian was united in marriage with Bernard H. Meyer. They moved to Centerville, MI and later to Niles, MI where Bernie was a teacher and a coach. Marian and Bernie moved back to Portage and she became secretary to the Portage Central High School's principal and later moved with the principal to the new Portage Northern High School, retiring in 1978. Marian was a life long member of First Reformed Church of Portage where she taught Sunday School, Bible classes and Vacation Bible School. She and Bernie led Friendly Fellowship for 15 years, planning trips and programs. Marian served as secretary for Dorcas Society for 27 years. Marian was preceded in death by: her parents; step-father, Gerrit Tillema; her husband of 63 years, Bernie Meyer; 3 brothers, Okko Brouwer, Bud Brouwer and Jacob Tillema and a sister, Abbie Wenke. Marian was a loving wife, mom, grandma, great-grandma and a friend to all. She is survived by: a son, Bill Jan Meyer of Portage; a daughter, Helen Frank Peterman; 3 grandchildren, Scott Lynanne Peterman, Jim Jean Peterman and Amy David Green; 9 great-grandchildren, Jessica, Joshua, Erin,, Kaylee, Anna and Heather Peterman and Jacob, Benjamin and Noah Green; 3 step great-grandchildren, Jennifer Walker, Nicole Reuben Martinez and David Walker; 3 step great-great-grandchildren, Reuben, Mya and Kenadie Martinez; 2 sisters, Catherine Razenberg and Tillie Kramer; 2 sisters-in-law; Mary Brouwer and Ruth Meyer; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 2-4 & 6-8pm at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave. Services will be held 11:00 Wednesday morning, September 23, at First Reformed Church of Portage, 7905 S. Westnedge Ave., with Rev. Edwin A. Martin, officiating. Interment in Central Portage Cemetery will follow services. Memorials may be directed to First Reformed Church of Portage, Kalamazoo Gospel Mission or Rose Arbor Hospice Residence. www.langelands.com 269-343-1508.
