of Kalamazoo Passed away October 28, 2011 in Kalamazoo. She was born May 19, 1923 in Kalamazoo to the late George and Sophia Mezaros Kuki. She was united in marriage to Dewey VanderMeer, Jr., on May 14, 1948, who preceded her in death in March of 1969. Julia was a lifelong resident of Kalamazoo and a longtime member of Heritage Christian Reformed Church. Before being called to her eternal home, Julia was comfortable and enjoyed her last 3 ½ years at Life Care Center in Plainwell. Surviving Julia are her children, Dave Kathy VanderMeer and Don Lynette VanderMeer both of Kalamazoo; 4 grandchildren, Shawn Lindsey VanderMeer, Amy Tobey Brown, Sarah fiancé Brad Kiel VanderMeer and Michelle Jason Baarda; great grandchildren, Ethan and Erica VanderMeer and Makayla and Lilah Brown; sister, Elizabeth Doster ; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding Julia in death were sisters, Hermina Rutherford, Rosie Tripp, Sophia Tuckey; and brothers, George Kuki infant and Frank Kuki. Family will greet friends on Tuesday from 6-8 PM at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th St. Services will take place Wednesday, 11:00 AM at Heritage Christian Reformed Church, 2857 S. 11th St., Kalamazoo. A private interment will take place at Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the church or to the Alzheimer's Association.
