SMITH, JOE
of Kalamazoo, MI Joe Smith, age 93, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on December 9, 2013 following a short illness. Joe was born on November 16, 1920 in Kalamazoo, MI to William and Lupke Meulman Smith. Following his service in the army during WWII, he was employed at The Upjohn Company as a carpenter/cabinet maker for 37 years. Joe was also an active member of Calvary Bible Church, serving on the board for many years. On August 10, 1943 Joe was united in marriage to Phyllis Holtz and recently they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Joe is survived by his wife, Phyllis; three children, Leslee David Roberts, Michael Joy Smith, Philip LuAnn Smith; seven grandchildren, Beth Owen, Sheri Phil VanderLugt, Stephen Pam Roberts, Jodi Josh Andrews, Bryan Smith, Jonathan Smith, Stephanie Smith, and nine great grandchildren, Trevor Owen, Madison Owen, Alec VanderLugt, Reed VanderLugt, Chase Roberts, Alyson Roberts, Taylor Roberts, Abigail Andrews and Greta Andrews. He is also survived by two brothers, Andrew Betty Smith and William Wilma Smith. He was preceded in death by brothers Garrett, John, Dick, Claus, Rhine and sisters Jennie Fisk, Emogene VanDyk, Tillie Hoogenboom, Ann Kokmeyer and Lucille Smith. Services will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at Calvary Bible Church, 855 South Drake Road, Kalamazoo with Rev. Dr. John Barnett officiating. Friends may meet the family on Thursday, December 12 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the Langeland Family Funeral Home, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street, Kalamazoo. Memorial contributions in Joe's memory may be made to Hope for the Himalayas in care of Calvary Bible Church.
