Portage, MI Passed away on Friday, March 28, 2014. Age 78. Joan was born on February 27, 1936, the daughter of the late Floyd Carlton Johnson and Jennie J. Scheffers Johnson. She graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School. She worked as a crossing guard for Portage Public Schools and was a longtime member of Milwood Christian Reformed Church. She was married to Jack Bruining on June 10, 1955; he preceded her in death on February 11, 2008. She is survived by her son, Larry Linda Bruining of Grand Rapids; two grandchildren, Julianne Austin Lettinga and Amy Joan Bruining; one sister and one brother, Joyce Frank Zwart of Portage and Floyd C. Karen Johnson II of Bronson; and many nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 3, 2014 at Milwood Christian Reformed Church, 3306 Lovers Lane, Kalamazoo, MI 49001. Rev. Don Porter will officiate. Private interment will take place in Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th St. They may also visit with the family at the church one hour prior to the service on Thursday. Memorial contributions may be made to Milwood Christian Reformed Church or Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.
