Kalamazoo On Wednesday, October 16, 2013, Jack was called home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Jack was born April 20, 1935 in Kalamazoo, the son of the late Corneal and Alida Bestervelt Egberts. He graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1954 and from Western Michigan University in 1958 with a BBA degree. He also served in the United States Army for 2 years. Jack was employed by State Farm Insurance Company and then Federal Home Life Insurance Company for 21 years as Vice President and Controller until his retirement in 1989.
Jack loved children and was thrilled to be a Grandpa. He was very proud of his 2 grandsons and enjoyed spending time with them and watching them play baseball, football, hockey and basketball. He was an avid sports fan and particularly loved the Detroit Tigers. He officiated basketball and umpired softball for many years. He also enjoyed golfing and spending winters in Florida. He was an active member of 3rd Christian Reformed Church and served as deacon and treasurer for many years. On August 17, 1962 he was united in marriage to the former Connie Visser who survives. He is also survived by 2 sons, Jeff Liz Egberts and Scott Egberts, 2 grandsons, Joshua and Matthew Egberts, a sister-in-law Donna Egberts, numerous nieces and nephews, as well as many other members of his extended family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters and their husbands, Elaine John Nelson, Shirley David Langeland, and his brother Larry Egberts. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, October 21, 2013 in the Third Christian Reformed Church, 2400 Winchell Ave., with Rev. Dr. Kenneth Baker, officiating. The family will receive friends at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th St. on Sunday, October 20, 2013 from 3-6 PM and also on Monday at the church, beginning at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Kalamazoo Christian School Association or Third Christian Reformed Church.
