SCHWIDKAY, Herbert
of Kalamazoo Died August 3, 2011 at his residence. Herbert was born April 30, 1920 in Los Angeles, CA, a son of Levy and Bessie Schwidkay and had lived in Kalamazoo since 1953. He served as a Captain in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was stationed for a short time at the Pentagon. Prior to his retirement, Herbert was employed for 20 plus years as a Postal Clerk at the Kalamazoo Post Office. Herbert was a member of the B'Nai Israel Temple; the 40 & 8 Club; the American Legion Post #36; the Masonic Lodge # 22 F.&A.M. and a member of the Shriners where he was known as "Herbie the Clown" and was known for his balloon sculptures. Herbert was preceded in death by his sister Shirley Schwidkay. On March 27, 1949, he was married to the former Rose Salk, who survives. Also surviving are 2 daughters, Gayle Joseph Herman of Kalamazoo and Martha Charles Law of Opelika, AL; 8 grandchildren, Benjamin Lando, Marah Kris Bayona, Rachel Shamai Weinberger, step-grandson Daniel Herman, Shawn Law, Nikoli Schwidkay, Kyle Law and step-grandson Charles Law. Services will be held on Monday, August 8 at 11:00 am at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St. followed by military honors at 1 pm at Ft. Custer National Cemetery with the Ft. Custer Honor Guard and the U.S. Army officiating.
