Kalamazoo, MI Died Saturday morning June 15, 2013. Helen was born March 27, 1911 in Kalamazoo, Michigan a daughter of John and Helen Steinhaus Gernaat. She had been a lifelong Kalamazoo area resident and was employed with the Gibson Guitar Company for 30 years, retiring in 1968. Helen was also a member of the First Reformed Church of Portage. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank Ufkes on July 3, 1997; a son, James L. Ufkes on May 9, 1996; 3 brothers; 3 sisters; and an infant great-grandson. Helen is survived by a son, John W. Marilyn Ufkes of Kalamazoo; 8 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; 2 brothers, Phil Barbara Gernaat and John Evelyn Gernaat, Jr. all of Kalamazoo; 2 sisters, Dena Veldt and Alice Bill DeGroot all of Kalamazoo; and many nieces and nephews. Services will be held 11 o'clock Thursday from the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave. Friends may meet the family one hour prior to the service at the chapel. Interment will be in Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the First Reformed Church of Portage or Rose Arbor Hospice.
