Portage, MI Gerrit John Newmeyer, age 92, passed away on Monday, March 23, 2015 at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo, MI. He was born on February 15, 1923 in Kalamazoo, MI the son of Jacob and Jenny Mulder Newmeyer was a lifelong area resident. Gerrit served in the US Navy during WWII. He returned to Kalamazoo where he worked for the Upjohn Company for over 35 years before retiring. Gerrit was a former member of Grace Christian Reformed Church and Southern Heights Christian Reformed Church and currently a member of Covenant United Reformed Church. In his free time he enjoyed playing golf, gardening, family vacations and watching Detroit Tigers baseball. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Emegene Armstrong. On October 30, 1947 he married the former Lois Razenberg, who survives. Also surviving are two children, AnnLouise John Visser of Hixson, TN and Tom Renee Newmeyer of Titusville, FL; seven grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Schuring of Portage; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 10-11:00 Saturday morning at Covenant United Reformed Church, 3274 Lovers Lane, where services will begin at 11:00 with Rev. Jeremy Veldman officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Ever-Rest Memorial Park, South. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Park Village Pines. Arrangements were made by Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 662 South Burdick Street.
