HASSING, Everett "Ed"
Age 95, of Kalamazoo Went home to be with his Lord Sunday afternoon, February 1, 2009. Ed was born September 22, 1913, in Kalamazoo, the son of Simon and Nellie Vander Roest Hassing and has been a lifelong area resident. For many years he was employed with Allied Steel Service and later with Kalamazoo Department of Public Works. He was a longtime member of the Second Christian Reformed Church where he had served on the consistory. Through out the years he was active with the Kalamazoo Christian Schools and had served on the North Christian School Board. Ed was preceded in death by his first wife, Hermina Vlietstra in 1982; by a sister, Katherine DeVries; a brother, Philip Hassing; a half brother, Sam Hassing and a step-son, David Zylstra. On January 28, 1984, he was united in marriage to the former Barbara Zandee Zylstra who survives. Also surviving are his children, Gordon Sharon Hassing of Hilton Head Island, SC, Marjorie Gordon Dykstra of Abbotsford, B.C., and Dennis Hassing of Southern Pines, NC ; 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; step-children, Mary David Baker of Dearborn, MI, Robert Margaret Zylstra of Lookout Mt., GA, Richard Lisa Zylstra and Ann Dave DeGroot all of Lombard, IL; 11 step-grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM Friday at the Second Christian Reformed Church 3015 Nichols Rd. with Rev. Dr. Warren Lammers officiating. A private interment will be in Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park. Memorials in Ed's memory may be directed to the Kalamazoo Christian School Association or Second Christian Reformed Church. www.langelands.com
