Kalamazoo, MI Passed away on September 4, 2009 at Rose Arbor Hospice following many years of suffering from painful medical issues. Evelyn was born in Kalamazoo on November 30, 1924 to Henry and Harriet Niewoonder Schuring. Following graduation from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1942, she traveled by train to marry the love of her life, Robert E. Burt, who was serving in the U.S. Navy, on February 24, 1943. Upon his discharge, they returned to Kalamazoo. She devoted her life to caring for her family. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, canning vegetables and fruits, and later served as a 4-H leader. For two years she worked at the GM plant in Kalamazoo in the executive dining room. After her husband retired due to medical problems in 1983 they enjoyed watching NASCAR races, travelling and spending time with their family until he passed on 9/12/99. Following his death, her health began to deteriorate. However, she continued to enjoy travelling on cruise ships, watching NASCAR races and spending time with her grand- and great-grandchildren and her granddog Rocky. Surviving are her children Janice Burt-Davies, Robert and Timothy Burt; her grandchildren Brian Chris, Brandy, Keena, and Todd; her great-grandchildren Brian Jr., Jaimie, Nicholas, Katelyn, Jack and Xavier; her brothers Robert Beverly and Henry Sherry Niewoonder; sister-in-law Pat Burt; several nieces and nephews; her " adopted daughter" Sandy Ormanovich; and special friends Beverly Kurtz and Stacy Brown, her home health aide who provided many hours caring for Evelyn over the past two years. In lieu of flowers please direct your memorial donations to Stay Home Companions to cover the cost of her home health care to Jan Davies @ P.O. Box 20268, Kalamazoo, MI 49019. Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday 9/9/09 Riverside Cemetery at the corner of Gull Road and Riverview Drive the best entrance is next to Borgess Hospital. Following the service, friends are invited to meet with the family to share a cup of coffee and memories from 3-5pm at Perkins Restaurant, 3810 E. Cork Street.
