Donald Hoekstra

September 11, 1925 — April 16, 2010

Don passed away peacefully in his room at Park Village Pines on Friday, April 16, 2010. He was born on September 11, 1925 to Maynard and Christine Brondyke Hoekstra. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Blauvelt on November 5, 1948. In keeping with his family's tradition, Don started working at Hoekstra Meat Company at a very young age and spent his entire career as a meat cutter and co-owner. His community involvement included many years of volunteer service in the Westwood Fire Department, where he served as a Captain, and the Suburban Kiwanis Club, reaching the level of Lieutenant Governor. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Herman and a son, Lynn. Don is survived by his wife, Dorothy; sons, Larry Hoekstra and David Ginny Hoekstra; daughter-in-law, Joan Hoekstra; grandchildren, Keren Adam Brinks, Jeff Hoekstra fiancée, Heather Bonnema, Todd Karen Hoekstra, Abby Luke Steele, Katy Aaron Furman, Steve Hoekstra Sara Downey; many great grandchildren; brothers, Marvin Frances Hoekstra, Glen Hilda Hoekstra and Howard "Bud" Hoekstra; sister, Delores Van Oosterum; many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 AM in the Westwood Christian Reformed Church, 620 Northampton, with Pastors Bill Fernhout and Dale Slings officiating. The family will receive friends at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th St. on Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Park Village Pines or Westwood Christian Reformed Church Bus Fund. The family would like to extend a special word of thanks to the caregivers at Park Village Pines and Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan for the wonderful care given to Don during his last days.
