Kalamazoo Passed away Saturday afternoon, July 4, 2015. Dena was born July 16, 1921 in Kalamazoo the daughter of John and Helen Steinhaus Gernaat and had been a lifelong resident in the Kalamazoo area. She was a member of Second Christian Reformed Church, enjoyed camping, listening to music, and Monday morning coffee time. Dena mostly enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. On June 5, 1942 Dena was united in marriage to her loving husband John Veldt, who preceded her in death on July 14, 2004. She was also preceded in death by an infant daughter; and sisters and brothers, Helen, Ann, Florence, Garrett, Harm, Jake and Grace. Surviving are her children, Norman Mary Veldt, Donna Dennis Keith, John Lori Veldt, Russell Toni Veldt, Charles Linda Veldt; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; brothers and sister, Phillip Barbara Gernaat, Alice William DeGroot, John Lynn Gernaat; and many nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 11:00am Thursday July 9, at Second Christian Reformed Church, 3015 Nichols Rd with Pastor Fred DeYoung officiating. Interment will be in West Cooper Cemetery. Friends may meet the family Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8pm at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street. Memorials may be directed to Second Christian Reformed Church, or The Kalamazoo Christian School Association.
