GRAMATINS, Alfreds Of Kalamazoo Passed away on November 28, 2006, in Portage, MI. He was born on January 20th, 1905 in Cesis, Latvia to parents Janis and Marija Jekabsons Gramatins. He was a former employee of the State of Michigan Department of Transportation in Lansing. Mr. Gramatins served as a Civil Engineer and retired in 1975. Prior to that, from 1962 ? 1964 he had worked for Illinois State Highways in Chicago. From 1953 ? 1962, Mr. Gramatins was employed with consulting engineers and architects in Kalamazoo. He was educated at the University of Riga in Latvia and graduated from the Technical University in Darmstadt, Germany in 1950 receiving an Engineering Degree. On August 10, 1946, Mr. Gramatins was united in marriage to Mirdza Kalnietis. He was a member of the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran United Church of Kalamazoo, the Latvian Fraternity ?Talavija?, the American Latvian Association and the State Employee Retirees Association. Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Mirdza, son and daughter-in-law Janis Gramatins and Dace Blaumanis of Silver Spring, MD, daughter and son-in-law Laima and Stephen Patton of Kalamazoo and many relatives in the USA, Latvia, Germany and Australia. Funeral services will be held at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 Burdick St in Kalamazoo, Saturday, December 2, 2006 at 11:00a.m., Reverends? Biruta Puike and Leons Viksne, officiating. There will be a visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Occupation Museum of Latvia, c/o Daina Albertins, 1053 Alder Ln., Naperville, IL 60540 or a charity of one?s choice.
