Passed away Sunday evening April 8, 2018 at his residence. Steven was born on March 27, 1950 at Bronson Hospital, the son of Lawton K. Weurding and Phyllis M. (Duyser) Weurding. He grew up in Lawton, Michigan where he attended public schools. He graduated from Lawton High School in 1968, where he served as Senior Class President. He enrolled at Western Michigan University, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and a member of the University Student Center Board. He was awarded a Bachelor's degree, with a major in Speech and a minor in English in 1972. Upon graduation, he secured a teaching position at Marion High School in Marion, Indiana. It was there that he met lifelong friends and colleagues, John Keller and Sue Landau. He left Marion to return to WMU to pursue a Master's Degree in education which was awarded with honors (4.0 GPA) in 1978. During this time, he landed a job at South Haven High School teaching Reading and English. While there, he served as a building representative to the South Haven Education Association. He retired as a highly respected teacher in 2005, after 32 years of teaching. Steve was involved in local politics, serving as vice chair of the Texas Township Zoning Board of Appeals and also as a member of the Texas Township Planning Commission. He was a charter member of the Pine Island (Presbyterian) Church, serving as an elder and member of the facilities committee. He mowed the church property on Q Ave. and tended to the flowers and trees. He was an avid but average golfer. Steve was a charter member of the Statesmen Golf League at the States Golf Course in Vicksburg, MI. He got a hole in one in 1992. He was preceded in death by his parents. In 1986, he married the former Deborah Narregan, who survives. They were married August 9, 1986 in the First Presbyterian Church in Decatur, Michigan. Steve was a motorcycle enthusiast. For their 25th wedding anniversary they celebrated by riding their Harley along Lake Superior to Wawa, Ontario, Canada with family members and friends. He is also survived by two sisters; Sandra K. (Christopher) Wyatt of Denver, Colorado, Sharon L. (Mark) McGarry, of Traverse City Michigan, and a brother Scott (Kim) Weurding of Conklin, MI and 20 nieces and nephews, along with 10 grand nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 1 o'clock Friday, April 13th at the First Presbyterian Church, 321 W. South St. Visitation will be 4-8pm Thursday at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th St. Private burial will take place in Lakeside Cemetery, Decatur, MI at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the Pine Island Presbyterian Church or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
