Loving father and grandfather passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at the age of 63. Stephen was born in Kalamazoo on October 14, 1953, the son of the late Gilbert John Schmitt and Gertrude Catherine (Westrick) Schmitt. He graduated high school from Monsignor John R. Hackett High School (currently Hackett Catholic Prep) and attended Western Michigan University. Stephen retired from Jewel-Osco Grocery after over twenty-eight years of service. He loved to read, was an avid music lover and enjoyed watching sports on television. He is survived by two daughters, Keirstin (Anton) Seban and Kiley E. (Trevor) Schmitt; four grandchildren, Luke, Blake, Ian and Oliver; his siblings, Margaret "Peggy" (Max) Lane, Gilbert "Jack" Schmitt Jr., David (Char) Schmitt and Geri (James) Baker; and many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and a service to celebrate Stephen's life will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, April 28, at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, 2003 Mt Olivet Rd. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to National Multiple Sclerosis Society-Michigan Chapter, 21311 Civic Center Dr., Southfield, MI 48076. Arrangements by Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel.
