Martha P. Dykehouse

March 21, 1922 — June 18, 2017

DYKEHOUSE, Mrs. Martha P.
Kalamazoo, MI

Rounding out a long life of over 95 years, Martha died Sunday morning, June 18th. She was born March 21, 1922 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, a daughter of Anthony and Carrie (Flint) Myland. After her mother's early death in 1933, her father and Eliza Kucks married and they raised five children.
She was a staunch advocate of old-fashioned Dutch-style cleanliness. As it is said, you could eat off her floor. As a young woman, she worked for the nearby community of the Sisters of St. Joseph, and became lifelong friends with one of its members, Sister Francella Laethem, and they remained close until Sister's death in 1979. She later worked for Old Kent Bank for many years. She married John McKenzie Dykehouse and they raised three sons who, together with her husband, are all deceased. Her brother, John, died in 1997. She was blessed with a gift of music and had a beautiful voice. She shared uplifting song with churches and organizations throughout the Kalamazoo area. Over the last few years, she greatly enjoyed the comradery of the Chunky Monkey breakfast club. As her condition continued to decline, Wings of Hope Hospice came to her rescue and she spent her last days enfolded in the loving and attentive care she received at Allegan Country Enterprise, a warm and homey residence staffed by people of great compassion. Wings of Hope nurse, Linda Dockweiler, and A.C.E. owner Sheila Dever, together with aide, Nancy Hammer, gave Martha topnotch care and ensured that her passing was touched with a gentle grace. A special note of recognition is extended to Laurie LaParl for her devoted attention to Martha throughout many years. Martha is survived by a sister and her family, a step-brother and his wife and family, a special relative and caregiver, five grandchildren, three of whom have spouses and families, two great-granddaughters and many relatives and friends. In keeping with her wishes, there will be no gathering and no memorial service. Memorials may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice, 530 Linn St., Allegan, MI 49010. Arrangements were made by the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St.
