June 5, 1921 — August 19, 2017

Shinar, Margaret

Margaret Starr (Weekley) Shinar passed away peacefully at her daughter's home in Durham, NC, on Saturday, August 19th, 2017. Margaret was 96. Margaret was born June 5, 1921, to Eva and Willie Weekley, on the family farm, in Hampton County, South Carolina. She was valedictorian at Varnville High School and graduated from Winthrop University (College) in 1943 with a degree in Home Economics. Following graduation Margaret worked as a dietician for the United States Army Veterans Hospital in Columbia, SC. She met the love of her life, David A. Shinar in 1945, at the Fort Jackson Officers Club in Columbia as he returned from Europe. While Dave completed his undergraduate work at the University of Michigan, Margaret worked as the dietician for Bailey Hall, Michigan State University, East Lansing. Following their marriage in 1948 Margaret and Dave moved to Kalamazoo where Dave held a position with the American National Bank until his early death in 1979. In their early years in Kalamazoo Margaret and Dave loved dancing, playing bridge and entertaining friends, attending the Barn Theater and Church picnics. Margaret was an active mother and wife, working as a Cub Scout leader and serving as a Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Kalamazoo. She loved gardening, was a founding member of the Kalamazoo Flower Club and proudly became a Master Gardener. From 1972 to 1982 Margaret worked as the Business Manager for the Kalamazoo Junior Symphony, including managing the Symphony's European tour in 1977. In 1983, Margaret retired to Beaufort, South Carolina to be near her extended family and family farm in Hampton County. For most of the rest of her life Margaret divided her time between family and friends in Kalamazoo and in South Carolina. Margaret was always active and during these years she continued her service working as a volunteer at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, for the Meals on Wheels programs in both Kalamazoo and Beaufort, and writing notes to Pretty Lake Campers. Since 2011 Margaret has lived with her daughter, Elizabeth in Durham, North Carolina. Margaret continued to love birds and flowers, the neighborhood children's annual Halloween parade and especially Elizabeth's dogs Maya and Cooper. She continued to garden, raising tomatoes, herbs, and flowers in containers. Margaret is survived by four children, Bill, Bon Air, VA, Elizabeth, Durham, NC, John (Lisa), North Oaks, MN, and Jim (Joanne), Portage, MI; along with four beloved grandchildren, Rob, Ally, Alex, and Evan; her sister, Betty Jane Denney of Barwick, GA.; and her extended family of nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband Dave, Margaret was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Cara Marie Shinar; daughter-in-law, Martha Shinar; and siblings, Ruth, Doris, Lucas, Elizabeth, Jim & Jasper. Margaret was cremated in North Carolina. A memorial service will be held in Kalamazoo at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street on October 7, 2017 at 11AM.
