Jan passed away early Tuesday morning, February 21, 2017 at Bronson Methodist Hospital. She was born on June 30, 1951 in Ft. Wayne, IN, the daughter of the late Charles and Betty (Diener) Myers. On September 16, 1978, she was united in marriage to Kyle J. Dekema.
Jan loved her family above all else and devoted her life to caring for Megan and Kyle. She was intimately involved in every family event throughout the years. Jan left a thumb print on everything she was involved in from kindergarten parties, to travel softball and cheerleading, to family holidays. She had a vibrant personality and had a smile on her face wherever she went for whomever she met. The second love of her life was spending time in South Haven. From her high school years and throughout her life she found peace and happiness on Lake Michigan. Traveling was another one of Jan's passions in life and each winter took a family trip to somewhere warm. Jan led a life well lived full of love, passion, commitment and honesty. Anyone who met her never forgot her. She will live on through her warm smile, her loving embrace and contagious laughter.
Surviving are her husband of 38 years, Kyle Dekema; daughter, Megan Dekema of Portage; two sisters, Joy (Mike) Powers of Phoenix, AZ and Dawn (Jason) Scudder of Atlanta, GA; and several nieces, nephews and extended family. Friends may visit with Jan's family from 5-8 PM on Thursday, Feb. 23, at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th Street. A service to celebrate Jan's life will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, Feb. 24, at the funeral home. In honor of Jan's mother, Betty, who battled breast cancer, memorial contributions may be directed to Susan G. Komen Michigan.
