Gerrit, age 86, passed away Friday evening, July 7, 2017 at his home in Kalamazoo.
Born January 7, 1931 in Kalamazoo, he was the son of the late Abram and Nellie Wagenaar Visser. Gerrit was a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School.
After serving in the military in Korea during that conflict, he went on to graduate from Western Michigan University on the GI Bill. He was a self-employed accountant, planning to retire this year, just before learning of his illness.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Gadoury Visser, whom he married on May 6, 1961. Also surviving are their three children, Michael (Elizabeth) Visser of Kent, WA, Beth (Jon) Batts of Kalamazoo, and Matthew (Karen) Visser of Avondale Estates, GA; 8 grand¬children, Mackenzie Visser and Samuel Visser of Kent, WA, Capt. Nathaniel (Melanie DeVries) Batts of Dover, DE, Chad (Jenna VandeWoude) Batts of Mattawan, Ml, Sydney Batts of Kalamazoo, and Dayton, Noah, and Gabrielle Visser of Avondale Estates, GA; 2 great-grandchildren, Shane and Londyn Batts of Dover, DE; 4 siblings, Effie Dykstra of Elmhurst, IL, Wilma (Neil) Kuiper, Henry (Clarine) Visser, and Norma (Robert) Herder, all of Kalamazoo; sister-in-law, Carol Visser of Kalamazoo; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his 2 older brothers, John and Sam Visser.
A private committal service will be held at Fort Custer National Cemetery. Visiting hours with the family will be from 5-8 PM on Tuesday, July 11, at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th Street. A Memorial Service for Gerrit will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, July 21, at Heritage Christian Reformed Church, 2857 South 11th St, with the Rev. David Gadoury officiating.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Heritage Christian Reformed Church Benevolence Fund or to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan
