Died Friday afternoon March 3, 2017. Elma was born October 28, 1928 in Coldwater, Michigan a daughter of Harold and Helen (Hulce) Smith. She had been a Kalamazoo area resident most of her life and was employed with the Portage Public School for 35 years as a teacher, before retiring. Elma was also a member of the Community of Christ Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bruce D. Witsaman on June 28, 2005; and her son, Mark Witsaman on March 3, 2017. Elma is survived by a sister, Ruthellen (Rollin "Ron") McCurley of Kalamazoo; daughter-in-law, Lauren Witsaman of Comstock Park; a grandson, Nathaniel Witsaman of Comstock Park; a niece, Lynette (James Barlow) McCurley of Kalamazoo; a nephew, David (Debbie) McCurley of Kalamazoo; great-nieces, Valerie Cochran of Georgia; Cristin (Scott) Abernathy of North Carolina; Meghan McCurley of Kalamazoo and great-nephew, Andrew (Lindsay Jaime) Cochran of Italy; a sister-in-law, Shirley Cook; and a niece, Maribeth (Jim) Haseley. A memorial service will be held 11 o'clock on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at the Community of Christ Church, 2523 Amherst Ave. Friends may meet the family one hour prior to the service at the church. Private burial will be held in Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the Kalamazoo Community of Christ Church.
