MARKOU, Constantine
Portage, MI
Formerly of Riverview, MI

Constantine Markou, age 88, died on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 in Kalamazoo, MI. He was born on March 15, 1928 in Domvrena, Greece, a son of Spiros and Andigoni (Katsibardis) Markou, and immigrated to the United States when he was 27 years old. He met Athena Alexopoulou at a dance and after a short courtship, they were united in marriage on January 26, 1958. Constantine was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Southgate, MI. He was great family man and loved to welcome friends and family and make them feel at home. He was also an animated story teller; his stories were so funny and full of wisdom. He was an incredibly active "Hockey Dad", always standing behind the glass watching the game. He loved to work with his hands, whether working on a car, finishing a basement, or fixing a wrist watch, Constantine was a true genius at fixing things. He also had a passion for music; he loved to sing and listen to classic Greek bouzouki music as well as American Blues. Constantine always provided for his beloved wife and family and worked for over 30 years as a steelworker at McLouth Steel, working swing shift for many of those years. Constantine and Athena moved to Portage in 2002 to be closer to their children and grandchildren. They enjoyed a long, happy marriage of 55 years and did everything together like lovebirds.

Athena preceded Constantine in death on August 12, 2012. Constantine was also preceded in death by his parents; a sister Maria Dambanis, a brother, John Markou, and a brother-in-law, Christ. He is survived by three children, Andigoni Markou Blankenship, Spiro Markou and Anastase Markou; a daughter-in-law, Britt Hartenberger; a former daughter-in-law, Colleen Markou; three grandchildren, Kimberly Anne Blankenship, Keelin Athena Markou and Ariadne June Markou; a sister-in-law, Sophia Nicholas of Detroit, and a cousin, Alexandria Deskins. He also leaves behind devoted nieces and nephews of the Nicholas Family, Pete, Jimmy, Freda and Dora. Please join us in the remembering and celebration of Constantine Markou's life.
